Remembering Allan Moonie How can I put the life of a friend I have know for over 20 years into a few words ? Oliver Allan Moonie O.A.M Known as Allan Moonie, or Minor Moonie as he was affectionately known He was unique in the history of the Australia show dog fraternity. Having brought his first Smooth Fox Terrier for two shillings and sixpence and won the puppy class. This was 1936. Allan was hooked on showing. Allan was elected foundation President of the Smooth Fox Terrier Association of N.S.W in 1948. His energy and enthusiasm for the breed kept him in that position until 1998, 50 years. An Australian record. His calm approach and gentle manner made him a popular choice as he found himself being asked to judge many parades and open shows. Allan judges his first Championship Show in 1942 and was accredited with his all breeds licence in 1953. He was a highly respected dog show judge throughout Australia and New Zealand. Alan loved to judge, he was afraid to make a high award to a minor puppy, hence the name Minor Moonie. The knowledge he amassed in more than half a century was always given freely and generously. What he knew he shared. He was one of the significant contributors to the standard we enjoy in the dog world today. He gave more than he received. He taught so many new comers, young and the not so young, the finer points of raising and showing pedigree dogs. Throughout Allans commitment to the dog world he has had the devoted support of his wife Beryl. As announced in the New Years Honours list 2000, Oliver Allan Moonie was awarded the Order Of Australia. The award was presented to Allan at Government House in recognition of his unique contribution and the high standards he set within the dog world. There is nothing minor about that. Allan was always a gentleman and we will all miss him greatly. By Mrs Olive Black President Smooth Fox Terrier Association NSW |
