Origin & Purpose of The Smooth Fox Terrier Club of NSW
By Alan Moonie
This association came into being as a result of a determination of a number of fanciers to possess a club of their own, The objective being the betterment and advancement of the breed.
The inaugural meeting, Which took place on April 27th 1948 in a hall close to Wynyard station in George St Sydney, the meeting was convened by Mr L.J Bray of "Braeburn" Fame, and was chaired by Mr Norm Hydern.
After considerable discussion, it was resolved to form this Association to cater for the Smooth Fox Terrier, which I feel in the thirty five years of its existence it has certinly done.
The foundation officers were - Patrons: Messrs L J Bray, J Fitzpatric & J Mansfield. President Mr O A Moonie; Vice- Presidents; Messrs S Hale, F Knowles & J Winter; Hon Secretary; Mr D F Scott: Hon Treasurer; Mr L J Bray; Committee; Messrs F Hayne, M Kramer & F Moore; Publicity Officer; Mrs L Cunningham - a band of loyal and dedicated people, who safely steered us through the minor difficulties which confront most newly formed bodies.
The expenses of this meeting were considerable and were fully met by Mr Bray. And the Association is deeply conscious of this service preformed by Mr Bray in this regard.
Our first championship show was held on Saturday 4th September 1948, at Bebarialds Grounds , Norton St Leichhardt. The judge was the late Mr J.J.K Dwyer, one of the top all rounders this country has produced and held in high regard. The entry was 71, 36 dogs and 35 bitches, CC winners were; dogs Kelvin Karonia, from the junior class, who soon became a Champion in a very competitive breed; bitches, Ch Yootha Lucille from the open class.
Both were owned by Mrs D F Scott, both were by Yootha sires, which illustrated the strong influence of this line of breeding on our breed. Quality was clearly evident at this show, with such dogs as Ch Perocliff Beau Brummell (CC winner Sydney Royal), Ch Grenpark Smoky, Cunona Clipper (who also became a Champion). Top bitches were Doonside Dash, Cygnet Sunshine (both subsequent Champions) Ch Kelvin Killingwood ( who won two CCs at Sydney Royals). So our first show did not lack quality, and set the standard of excellence which this association has done its very best to maintain.
Our Association is holding the 35th Anniversary Show on Easter Sunday 3rd April, 1983 at Blacktown Showground, our judge Mr J Ellen (NSW).
