The MAGIC of MILWARD
Peter Luyten
Any issue featuring the Fox Terrier would be incomplete without an in depth reference to the breeders who have collectively placed and held him upon the pedestal as gentleman of the canine race.
Per medium of that excellent terrier speciality magazine "Down Under", it has been my pleasure to bring to the public eye such English notables as Mary Blake, Linda Beak, Mrs J T Winstanley and others.
All Fox terrier fanciers who have been in the spotlight for their continued contribution to the cause of the breed.
One who ranks equal of those illustrious names of modern Fox Terrierdom is a name restricted from the international honour roles, only by his geographic location, C E Milward.
On rural property amidst the breeding of Murray Grey Cattle, a long time interest, his joint venture with his dear wife Elvie, that of breeding goats for their fleeces, and the propagation of flowers and fruit trees, lives Australias answer to the late and great Herbert Johnson.
Cameron Eugene Milward lives for but two things outside his family and grandchildren. The breeding of exhibition poultry the championship awards of which are innumerable, and the passion of the Smooth Fox Terrier.
Fifty years or better have evolved the Grenpark strain of Fox Terriers noted internationally for their quality heads, eyes, ears and showmanship. No one knows the champions of record that have graced the Grenpark Prefix but no one alive or passed on has produced champions of record in such numbers or such continuity.
Known by all who really know their terriers, the guest recording book of visitors read like the international roll of merit, as dog men will seek each other out whenever the opportunity presents itself. Many Smooth have left the kennels and taken up illustrious careers in America and other far off lands. Many have made their continued contribution to other successful kennels for their new owners. The much feted American Champion Tarb the Brat boasts a great Grenpark bitch for his tail female line.
Australian Champion and American Champion, New Zealand Champion etc etc, proudly carry the Grenpark banner where ever wise terrier folk have invested in the purified blood of all that is good in the breed. For many years the kennel kept itself exclusively to the black marked colour. Within the last decade tans have once again been very evident. The last three Melbourne Royal bitch CCs have all been won by tan Grenpark Champion bitches, under overseas judges, shown in perfect condition.
How can this one man make such an indelible mark on a breed ? His total devotion is and his power of observation is uncanny. His cleaver usage of the right outside dog on his many generations of homebred bitches, his retention of the right individuals, all point to the fact that here is a master of his craft. How can we hope to gain his expertise ? Only by the same devotion to blood and study of the facts before us all.
No greater honour can be thrust upon a man than to be known as the doyen of his chosen interest in the livestock field. No lesser title could be used to describe his efforts and few handle it with such humility and consummate ease.
His standards are the highest, his achievements beyond any doubt. Many have been his green eyed detractors whose jealous remarks have faded into insignificance. Yet his strength of purpose, his continued enthusiasm for the new pup, his adherence to the highest principles of the terrier man, set him in a class alone. We who have been able to share his time, his knowledge and his stock can only be thankful to have been so fortunate as to have seen Milward Magic at work time and again.
Fox Terriers you are in luck whilst you have a man of such calibre at your service.
